Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain & Edgar Meyer

Thursday, June 24 • 7:30 p.m.

BelaEdgarZakir.jpgThree masterful genre-benders and the leading virtuosos on their respective instruments, Béla Fleck (banjo), Zakir Hussain (tabla) and Edgar Meyer (bass) move with ease among the worlds of classical, bluegrass and world music. Fleck has been called the premiere banjo player in the world and has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the instrument. Hussain is appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon. Meyer is prominently established as a unique and masterful instrumentalist and has an active career as both a performer and composer.

Brubeck Brothers Quartet

Brubeck_Brothers.jpgOpening the concert is an exciting jazz group that features two members of one of America’s most accomplished musical families, Daniel Brubeck (drums), and Chris Brubeck (bass & trombone). Guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb complete the dynamic contemporary jazz quartet. All About Jazz raved about the quartet, “…the BBQ attains that rarefied level where music is both relaxed and expressive, and their joy in its creation is contagious.”

Chris and Dan Brubeck will present a talk "Growing Up Brubeck" on Thursday, June 24. See our blog for more details.

As a long-time fan of Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, I was excited to see the show and the new experiments with Zakir Hussain. Hussain is a percussionist I’ve heard for years on recordings, but until Thursday night, I’d never had the opportunity to watch and hear him in action. He was a complete show stopper! From blindingly fast displays to delicate passages, his utter mastery of his instrument (tabla) was one of the most inspiring and mezmorizing things I’ve ever seen. As good as Fleck and Meyer were, Hussain’s talent is unmatched. What a show.
