CAKE
Monday, August 21, 2006 • 7:30 p.m.
CAKE's irony-drenched sound freely mixes varying genres- funk, hip-hop, country, new wave, pop, jazz and guitar rock- takes delight in the clashes that result. The band's songs, including "The Distance," "Never There" and "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" are filled with pop culture references and smirky satire, Frontman John McCrea, whose baritone ranges from deadpan irony to deeply sincere crooning, delivers the songs with bone-dry detachment in his speak-singing style. In their latest album Pressure Chief, the signature CAKE elements are evident.

Reviews:
OK, so my kids got me hooked on Cake and I just had to come see them at the Britt. They played my favorites, including “Rock n’ Roll Lifestyle” and “Frank Sinatra”. I also enjoyed their audience patter, including putting a heckler in his place. It was heartening to see other “Boomers” enjoying these guys, too. :)
