A major influence on Miles Davis, pianist Ahmad Jamal's manupulations of space and silence, tension and release, and dynamics all broke new ground and had a major impact on late '50s cool. His hit version of "Poinciana" remains Jamal's signature tune. And even though Jamal built his reputation on his trio recordings, he has continued to work with different lineups. In the 1970s, he began experimenting with electronic instruments and has also collaborated with orchestras. Ahmad constinues to tour and record regularly in various settings.
Regina Carter Quintet
Jazz violinist supreme Regina Carter has been a veritable crescendo of success that shows no sign of letting up. She was the first jazz artist and the first African-American to be chosen to play Paganini's famed Guarneri "Cannon" violin. Carter has won acclaim for her solos with Wynton Marsalis and Cassandra Wilson. She's recorded with artists ranging from pop icons Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle to legendary jazz pianist Kenny Barron. She has also recorded with some of the new divas including Mary J. Blige and Lauryn Hill. Last summer, she released her most stylistically focused work to date with her sixth solo release, I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey.
