Saturday, August 20, 2005 • 7 p.m.

Beethoven Leonore Overture No. 2
Beethoven Violin Concerto
Lutoslawski Concerto for Orchestra

LeilaJosefowicz.jpgBeethoven's Leonore Overture No. 2 is the perfect introduction to the composer's beautiful, lyrical Violin Concerto in D. Violinist Leila has won the hearts of audiences around the word, thril;ling them with her technical brilliance and fresh approach to the repertoire. No stranger to television, Ms. Josefowicz has appeared on The Tonight Show, Evening at Pops, Live from Lincoln Center and CBS Sunday Morning. Don't miss this chance to hear her live.

Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra fills the second half of the rogram. Composed in the early 1950s, this piece was a huge and immediate sucess with the public when it premiered in Stalinist Poland. James DePreist and the oregon Symphony made the firs-ever CD recording of this work in 1987 and DePreist said this is "an excuisite 20th century masterpiece that is too often neglected." Like Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, the Lutoslawski gives solo treatment to individual instruments of the orchestra and uses folk music extensively to create a daring and spirited work.
