Chris Thile released the first of five solo albums when he was just 13. By the time he was 20, he was attracting a following among pop, country and alternative-rock audiences as a member of the Grammy Award-winning Nickel Creek. A Washington Post critic recently said Thile "may well be the most virtuosic American ever to play the mandolin." Talented musicians…but, disappointing. They were billed as Bluegrass. We expected a peppy, moving performance. What we saw was a lot of tuning of instruments and slow, strange alternative songs. If they stayed with their roots and listened to the audience asking for more banjo they would have done well… instead – many people just left early.
