RatDog began as a laid-back blues ensemble in 1995, but has evolved into a snarling rock band with a fabulous jazz trio at its heart. Of course, all those forms are different facets of Bob Weir's unruly musical personality. Even when his first band, the Grateful Dead, was playing close to 100 shows a year, Weir maintained an active solo career. He then settled into a duo partnership with bassist Rob Wasserman that became RatDog. The band covers the majority of the Grateful Dead songbook, including Garcia classics like "Standing on the Moon," "St. Stephen," and "Touch of Grey," along with Weir's complete solo repertoire.

Jackie Greene

jackiegreene.jpgOpening the concert is Jackie Greene, the Americana phenom from Sacramento who has steadily built up a passionate following among both fans and some of the biggest names in music. He's equally adept at acoustic finger-picking, ripping it up on the electric guitar, coloring a song on the electric piano or firing up a jam on the Hammond B-3. With his latest album Giving Up the Ghost Greene stretches musically, while still delivering plenty of the unvarnished Americana that has made him such a sensation.

I really enjoyed this show. I was looking forward to seeing Jackie Greene and he didn’t disappoint. It’s tough being the opening act, but the crowd warmed up to him quickly. Just a fantastic singer/songwriter/guitar player.

I loved RatDog’s performance last year, but the vocals were a little ragged and the energy seemed low during most of the first set. This year, the band sounded much tighter and Bob’s vocals were great. The band opened with an uptempo Shakedown Street, and other than a little lull during She Belongs to Me and Jus’ Like Mama Said, they kept the energy up for the whole show. The highlight of the night had to be Morning Dew which included an incredible guitar performance by Mark Karan. The show ended with Jackie Greene joining Ratdog on Going Down the Road Feelin’ Bad.

The only disappointing thing about this show was the 10:30 curfew. The band made it clear on it’s website that it intended to play two sets “barring curfew”. Instead, we got one great set without the time for an encore. Some RatDog fans said they wished that Jackie wasn’t opening, so RatDog could play two full sets. As for me, I really liked Jackie Greene and am glad he was there. I think Britt needs to push for a later curfew on Friday and Saturday nights. The people of Jacksonville have to appreciate what a treasure Britt is and to deal with a little late music a few weekends per summer to support it.
