In August 2010, Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs released the critically acclaimed, Grammy award winning album God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the Digital Album chart. This marked a personal sales best for Ray and tied his debut chart position at #3 with Gossip in the Grain. The single, “Beg Steal or Borrow” became Ray’s first radio #1 on the AAA BDS and Mediabase. The Associated Press called the album “one of the year’s best,” while the New York Daily News’ 5 star review said the album is “one of the stand out releases of the year.” In addition to winning Best Contemporary Folk Album for God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise, the album also garnered nominations for the coveted Song of The Year category for “Beg Steal or Borrow” as well as Best Engineered Album.
As Brandi Carlile’s fans know well, her concerts are near legendary in their perfect communion between performer and audience. Whether she’s rocking out with a full band or standing tantalizingly close to the edge of the stage singing a capella, Carlile brings a riveting intensity to her live shows. Her songs are a blend of pop, rock, alternative country, indie and folk and exhibit the same kind of intensity and passion her live shows do.
Two of the newest voices in pop music come from the folk/country roots of real-life siblings Laura and Lydia Rogers. The Secret Sisters emerged from Alabama, “emboldened with a zeal for country music and a knowledgeable repertoire of the American cannon of classic recording,” and created a self-titled debut Rolling Stone called “…boundless fun.” Covers like Sinatra’s “Something Stupid” prove their grasp may just exceed their reach, too.
