Slightly Stoopid

Friday, June 18 • 6:30 p.m.

SlightlyStoopid.jpgReggae/rock/psychedelia band Slightly Stoopid has built a large and loyal fan base, and has soared to one of the most successful bands of this decade. Childhood friends Miles Doughty and Kyle MacDonald formed the group in 1995, mixing reggae and punk sounds into one smooth stylistic cocktail. The buzz surrounding Slightly Stoopid continues to increase with each successive release, supported by the band’s incessant touring. Founder Kyle McDonald says, “Without (the fans) we’d just be playing at a bar…when we go out and people are having that good of a time, the energy goes back and forth.”

Steel Pulse

SteelPulse.jpgSteel Pulse is one of Britain's greatest reggae bands, in terms of creative and commercial success. The band started out playing authentic roots reggae with touches of jazz and Latin music, and earned a substantial audience worldwide. Their 1978 debut, Handsworth Revolution, is still regarded by many critics as a landmark and a high point of British reggae. By the late '80s, Steel Pulse had won a Grammy and were working full-fledged crossover territory. They subsequently returned to a tough-minded, rootsy sound and have added touches of dancehall and hip-hop along the way.

The Expendables

TheExpendables.jpgSanta Cruz-based reggae/rock band The Expendables opens this concert. Since 1997, The Expendables have staked their claim in the California surf rock genre. Blending reggae, punk rock and '80s style dueling guitar solos, the band has been turning heads for years.

I was amazed that Steel Pulse was “out-headlined” by Slightly Stoopid. I had never heard of the expendables before but they were sick. Steel Pulse was by far the best performance, but i could not believe they didnt play my favorite son of theirs..‘Your House’. Slightly Stoopid’s performance was also very good but Steel Pulse stole the show!

If anyone can top Slighly Stoopid’s performance, we will have an amazing season at Britt. The band was tight and the lyrics were clever. What a surprise from someone who had never heard a song from them before.
