Susan Tedeschi

Saturday, September 2, 2006 • 7 p.m.

susantedeschi-06.jpgIn the years since she captured the public's musical imaginations with her 1998 breakthrough album Just Won't Burn, the multi-talented musician has established herself as a deeply expressive singer, a prodigously talented guitarist and distinctive songwriter. She's won a large and loyal audience with her ablilty to craft elements of classic blues, rock, R&B, folk and gospel inot a distinctly individual style that honors rooty musical traditions without being subservient to them. Hope and Desire, Tedeschi's fourth album marks a substantial departure for the versatile artist, presenting Tedeschi in the role of interpretive vocal stylist. She puts a soulful, unmistakaby persona spin on a heartfelt set of songs from legends like bob Dylan, Ray Charles, the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin and Donny Hathaway, to name a few. Tedeschi received a standing ovation during her last Britt performance with Etta James.

The Subdudes

Saturday, September 2, 2006 • 7 p.m.

subdudes.jpgThe Subdudes draw most of their inspiration from the sound of their native New Orleans, blending blues, gospel, funk, and R&B with their own harmony vocals, Their sound is also notable for the band's substitution of a tamborine player for a drummer. The band came together after backing artists such as Joni Mitchell and Roseanne Cash and recorded its debut in 1990, which, like its subsequent albums (including Lucky, Primitive Streak and Live at Last), featured a mix of covers and originals. After an eight-year sabbatical, the Subdudes joined Bob Dylan guitarist Freddy Koella to produce Miracle Mule in spring 204. Behind the Levee is their latest project produced by Keb' Mo and receiveing much critical acclaim.

Well, Ms Tadeschi knocked my socks off. She’s a wailer and a heck of a good guitar player. Another “new-to-me” musician to add to my ever-growing list. I may have to get an ipod with greater capacity!
