The Swell Season

The Swell Season is the Oscar-winning duo of Frames frontman Glen Hansard and Czech ingénue Marketa Irglova, who rose in the public eye as a result of their beloved, surprise hit 2007 film and gold-certified soundtrack Once. The indie folk/rock duo generated a wave of acclaim during the 2008 awards season, including two Grammy nominations and an Oscar win for Best Original Song, for their hit single “Falling Slowly.” The new album Strict Joy has also earned critical acclaim. The Wall Street Journal described the lead single “Low Rising” as a “slow-burning soul number” and NPR called the album, “A lush, lovely, heartfelt gem.”

Black Prairie

The string band Black Prairie features three members of indie folk-rock band The Decemberists - Chris Funk, Nate Query and Jenny Conlee - along with Portland musicians Annalisa Tornfelt and Jon Neufeld. Black Prairie's songs consist mostly of instrumentals; their arrangements draw from bluegrass and old-time string band traditions, while Conlee's accordion and Tornfelt's violin instill klezmer and gypsy elements to the band's unique and vibrant sound.
