young-britt.jpgToday we celebrate Peter Britt's 190th birthday. The Britt staff is having birthday cake here in the Britt office today in honor of this extraordinary man.

Peter Britt (1819-1905) came to Jacksonville in 1852 after immigrating from Switzerland and spending seven years in Illinois. Like others, he hoped to make money mining gold, though his real passion-and ultimate success-came with photography and horticulture. He is credited with taking the first photograph of Crater Lake, planting the region's first fruit trees and opening Southern Oregon's first winery.

His estate, now the site of Britt Festivals, still bears the fruit trees and other vegetation he planted there more than a century ago. We are proud to provide to provide high quality performances on the estate of a man who had such an impact on the region.
