Britt is way more than concerts!

Posted Jul 18, 2008 at 01:22 PM in General, Britt Institute

Did you know that Britt Festivals is much more than putting on great concerts? We have an educational arm that has been busy this summer hosting extremely talented students at our summer camps. Each summer, the Britt Institute offers young musicians a chance to study and perform with some of the nation's top professional musicians and instructors. These one- and two-week camps in jazz, saxophone and strings are intensive, challenging and inspiring.

Check out Dr. Rhett Bender's blog that gives you an inside look at the 2008 Sisiyou Saxophone Workshop. Dr. Bender was the camp director this year. He is also an associate professor of music at Southern Oregon University.

In two weeks, the String Quartet Academy will kick-off. One of the only camps in the nation that focuses solely on string quartet repertoire, Britt Institute’s String Quartet Academy offers intermediate to advanced students between the ages of 14 and 22 a comprehensive musical education. The special training and expertise of the faculty, The Arianna String Quartet, challenges young musicians to expand their technique and musicianship in ways that will change their approach to music forever.

Out of 81 students who auditioned to participate in the academy, 39 students from across the nation and three international students were accepted to attend the camp this year. There are six students representing the Rogue Valley. Due to the generosity of Britt donors and patrons, over $20,000 in scholarships have been provided to students attending this camp. The String Quartet Academy camp runs from July 30 to Aug. 16, 2008.

The students will be showcasing their skills at three performances:

String Quartet Academy Connoisseur Concert—Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Skyline Plaza at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford. This concert is available to residents of the Manor.

String Quartet Academy Celebration of 2008 Classical Season: A Quartet on Every Corner!—Saturday, August 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. in downtown Jacksonville. There will be a total of 10 quartets each comprised of four students—two violins, one viola and one cello. The students perform pieces composed by Joseph Haydn, the “Father of the String Quartet."

String Quartet Academy Final Recital—Part One will be performed Saturday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. and Part Two follows at 2 p.m. Both parts will be at the Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Great Hall in Ashland. This concert is free and open to the public.
