Each year, Britt selects original artwork from a local artist to commemorate the season. Our 2015 poster artist is Sue Bennett of Jacksonville. Bennett's original watercolor, titled "Moon Music," was revealed on May 13 at a special reception. Mrs. Bennett spoke of her inspiration for the piece, going back to a childhood memory of viewing a sculpture for the first time. "Hold that image and add six years when I saw a movie about a statue that comes to life," Bennett added. These early impressions fostered Bennett's interest in sculpture, and a later affinity for Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux's "The Dance" stayed in her mind. "Moon Music" reflects the artist's desire "to retain and respect the spirit of the sculpture but free the white marble figures to take on color - and dance into contemporary life of musical celebration on the Britt Hill!"
Mrs. Bennett and Britt President & CEO, Donna Briggs, officially unveiled the poster artwork to the guests in attendance.
Sue Bennett took a moment to sign posters for reception attendees. The 2015 poster is available for sale at the Britt offices in Medford: $35 for a signed poster and $20 for an unsigned poster.
The poster reception also celebrated the Britt partnership with Jacksonville Elementary School. For 27 years, Britt has provided the venue and production support for Jacksonville's annual school musical and sponsors a school-wide poster contest. Each student designs artwork in the theme of the musical. Two winners are chosen from each grade level and one grand prize winner is selected for use as a poster to promote the performance.
Each poster contest winner received a certificate, ribbon and voucher for a classical festival performance. Jacksonville Elementary School principal, Joe Frazier, was presented with a framed 2015 Britt poster in honor of the long-standing partnership with Britt.
Guests were treated to a preview of the 2015 musical, Disney's Little Mermaid Jr. Under the direction of Wendy Stanek, 180 4th through 6th graders will bring the classic animated film to life on Thursday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Britt Pavillion. Tickets are $4/person or $9/family.
