Don’t let these special concerts at Britt pass you by! See what critics are saying about some of the artists coming to Britt’s stage in August.

The Golden Age of Silver Screen (Part I) featuring violinist Janet Sung  — Friday, August 8

Every August, over 100 professional musicians from America’s great orchestras and some of the world’s best-loved guest soloists come together to offer extraordinary classical music under the stars at Britt. This summer, Maestro Peter Bay has planned a two-night tribute to The Golden Age of the Silver Screen. On the first night, August 8, guest soloist Janet Sung (violinist) will mesmerize patrons with her lustrous tone and dynamic interpretations of Erich Korngold’s Violin Concerto.

“To say that Janet Sung plays the violin well is like noting that Baryshnikov is graceful or that Ernest Hemingway knew English.” —Harvard Gazette

“Guest violinist Janet Sung showed complete command of the piece [Korngold Violin Concerto], from its lighter, softer moments to its more frantic, fast-paced interludes. Sung helped make the piece fascinating.” —Corpus Christi Caller-Times

“Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is one of a handful of dance companies that regularly appear in Annenberg’s Dance Celebration series, and for good reason. The high-spirited modern troupe puts on a great show that consistently fills up the auditorium.” —Philadelphia City Paper

“Intriguing, tantalizing…lush and gorgeous.” —Chicago Tribune

Judy Collins — Sunday, August 24

Judy Collins, a self-proclaimed American idol of 1957, is the definition of a living legend. Her influence in music and politics has spread over decades. Judy Collins keeps growing and challenging herself, writing books and songs, and performing. The blessing, she says, is having had the pleasure of doing her work, and having people read her books, listen to her music and come to her concerts.

“Judy continues, with music of hope and healing, to light up a world that needs music that matters, and speaks to the heart.” —Ad Age Magazine

“She was and she remains a queen of American music, blessed with a voice one critic likened to liquid silver. Schooled in classical piano Judy Collins could have made a life in any area of music she chose, but in the turbulent 1960s it seems that folk music chose her.” —Australian Broadcasting Corporation

“…Her voice, clear and vibrato free but inflected with delicate little shivers, [creates an] impulse to turn your head up, close your eyes and tune in to messages from far, far away.” —The New York Times

Lucinda Williams / The Waifs / The Avett Brothers — Thursday, August 28

Britt patrons will witness a night of remarkable music when Lucinda Williams, The Avett Brothers and The Waifs take the stage on August 28. These artists offer performances full of vulnerability and honesty. If you are looking for a little country, folk, blues, bluegrass and pop, you will find it all in one night at Britt.

“For over a decade Williams’ working-class eclecticism and broken heart have fueled the best country records around…Williams has always been in a class of her own, i.e. alone.”
—Newsweek.com

“[Williams’] performance had a sense of discovery, an edge of the excitement you feel when you reunite with an old friend.” —Los Angeles Times

“At its best, The Avett Brothers’ music sounds carefully unproduced, its conscious lack of gloss letting the full force of the band’s lyrics—from boyish lust and firebrand defiance to matrimonial love and childhood nostalgia—connect on the other side. Fans don’t leave Avett Brothers’ shows dissecting accidental sharps and flats. They leave raving about the experience.” —Indy Weekly

“The country/honky-tonk folk rock trio from Australia possesses sheer instrumental virtuosity. Whether it’s acoustic guitar, mandolin or dobro, The Waifs’ performances on these strummed instruments are a delight.” —Associated Press
