So what is imeem anyway?

Recently, I was asked to come up with a list of suggestions for social networks that the Britt Festivals should join. On the top of my list was imeem. In short, you take MySpace + Facebook + Photobucket + Limewire and you get imeem. It's what you get when social networking meets personal private networking.
Don't feel like you're out-of-the-loop, lame or old if you haven't heard of it-you're definitely not alone. But the way things are going, you will certainly hear about it soon. One study found that imeem has taken over Yahoo's throne by becoming the No. 1 streaming music site in the United States. USA Today stated, "According to imeem executives, imeem has more than 25 million visitors per month[3] with over 65,000 new users every day." -USA Today
The primary focus of imeem is to share media in many different forms: music, videos, photos, blogs, etc. As a visitor, you have access to music, videos, pictures, blogs and polls; however, commenting, rating, tagging and the posting of new content requires a user to register an account (which literally takes two minutes two create). Imeem gives you the power to create and share play lists; you can also search for a particular artist, view playlists featuring that artist, and listen to them.
Imeem is like Facebook or MySpace because members are encouraged to create personal pages with information about themselves. But since it is a social media site, these pages are centered on artists and albums, with personally created playlists.
A key feature promoted by imeem is the media playlist. Content posted from multiple sources may be collected into a playlist that can be posted for comments, tags and ratings. Creating a playlist is extremely easy (my 8-year-old daughter can do it). You type in the name of an artist or a song, and a page pops up with related media: individual songs, playlists created by others and even photos or animations created by other members. Click the "playlist" tab, name your playlist and a song or video has just been added to the mix. It's as easy as that!
Playlists can consist of videos, music or images. With the "Remix Player," music and images may be combined into a single presentation with customizable image transition effects.
It's really rad that you can create a slideshow of pictures and put it to the music of your choosing. With the pop-out player, you can put on your desktop and listen to it while you're working on other things. You can make a playlist consisting of music, videos or photos of your choosing. The options are endless. I'm sure you could think of at least 10 great slideshows you could make, right now.
Imeem provides a number of mechanisms to make content available to users outside of the site through RSS syndication and embedding content into external sites. However, as of July 22, 2008, MySpace deletes any updates or comments have the word ‘imeem' upon posting, making it impossible to even mention the site. But, you can still use imeem on facebook, your personal website, pandora, plentyoffish and many others.
Another great feature is how imeem links users through topic groups related to common interests. These groups can serve as online communities for artists, bands, clubs, films, schools, festivals, concert tours, friends and sports enthusiasts. Britt Festivals recently joined the Oregon and Portland groups, and we created our own Britt Festivals group (see the link below to join our group).
Now that you are an imeem expert (yeah you're back in the loop-cool and trendy), open your own imeem account and share your music, pics, blogs, etc. with us! Don't forget to add us as a friend and join the Britt Festivals page.
