What Happened at the Neville Brothers concert?

Posted Jun 19, 2008 at 05:59 PM in General, Behind The Scenes

Audience members at last Thursday’s (June 12) concert had an unusually long intermission (well over an hour) between Dr. John and The Neville Brothers’ sets.

While Britt management made one announcement to the audience about the technical difficulties, we sincerely apologize for not keeping everyone up to speed throughout the solution process. Our apologies also for the long wait.

What was the hold-up?

To answer, first here's a little background about the sound equipment on stage. The monitor console controls all the sound on stage. During the afternoon sound check, the sound technician saves all the settings on a digital card that gets inserted into the monitor console. When the performance time comes, the technician simply puts the card into the console, and everything is in place.

On Thursday, after Dr. John’s performance, the technician inserted the card with the pre-programmed settings for The Neville Brothers, but the digital files somehow got contaminated. The technician tried re-booting the monitor console a few times, but then it crashed. Without the monitors, the musicians on stage can’t hear themselves or each other properly, so they need it in order to perform. Fortunately, our sound company had a back-up console available, and they were able swap it with the one on stage. The crew hurried to get everything up and running as quickly as possible.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience this caused for our patrons. Fortunately, the Neville Brothers were able to play their full set once the equipment was ready.
