Celebrate Oregon’s 150th birthday with Pink Martini at Britt!
In 1959, radio personality Stan Freberg wrote a custom musical to celebrate Oregon’s Centennial, Oregon! Oregon!: A Centennial Fable in Three Acts. A delightful blend of fairy tale and musical theatre, the original act incorporated local businesses as loveable characters and even included Hollywood voice and radio actors with the musical accompaniment of a 21-piece big band!
To remember Mr. Freberg’s work and to honor Oregon on its 150th birthday, Portland-based Pink Martini and the Oregon National Guard 234th Army Band will perform a modernized version of the musical, Oregon! Oregon! 2009: A Sesquicentennial Fable in Four Acts. It will feature an additional musical number specifically written for the event by Pink Martini front man, Thomas M. Lauderdale. After the tribute, Pink Martini will perform a set of their signature music.
Pink Martini is a band of endless talents, not only because of their many members but also because of the unique blends of sound that flow through their music. With multiple members coming from multicultural backgrounds, Pink Martini plays no one genre of music; rather they attempt to appeal to anyone and everyone through constant transformation in musical and vocal styling.
A self-characterized “little orchestra,” Pink Martini has the elegance of classically trained musicians, the style of a 1940 Hollywood film, and of course, the spirit of Oregon. The experience of Pink Martini is best described as “music, which can be turned up or down, and played on almost any occasion, from background music of a love affair to vacuuming around the house.”
