Britt Institute Students Need Scholarships

Posted Apr 23, 2009 at 04:55 PM in General, Britt Institute

As the squeeze on family budgets tightens, there is an increasing trend of students needing more financial assistance to attend the Britt Institute summer programs: the Instrumental Jazz Camp, Saxophone Workshop and String Quartet Academy.

Typically, 50 percent of Britt students request financial assistance to attend Britt's educational programs. This year, an overwhelming 80 percent of applicants have requested financial assistance in paying for the tuition, room and board fees associated with attending Britt's programs. Approximately 100 talented young musicians will be selected through a highly competitive audition process. Scholarship awards start at $175 per student but even this modest subsidy makes a huge difference in a family's ability to send their student to a music program that has the power to enrich and shape a young life.

Along with the increasing need for Britt's programs and scholarships, the cost of providing programs and academies also grows each year. Housing for students in the SOU dormitories has increased by 100% in just four years. In order to maintain the caliber of the program and provide scholarship assistance, we look to the community for support.

The Britt Institute relies on the generosity of donors and the success of fundraisers such as the annual Britt Bash to provide the funds needed to bring these talented young musicians to study with the best and brightest faculty in the country.

Even with the generous support already received this year, the Britt Institute needs additional funds in order to meet the needs of this year's students.

The Britt Institute will present a number of events this summer to raise money for scholarships, including Jazzed about Jazz: Jazz Camp's 20th Anniversary Concert on Saturday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Britt Pavilion in Jacksonville.
