Camp Description:
Britt’s Instrumental Jazz Camp is a unique gathering of outstanding faculty members and creative young students. This camp is different from many in that it is not designed as a recruiting tool for a college or university. Instead, its sole focus is on educating students and making high-quality music. This inspirational week of study is designed to be rigorous and comprehensive. The faculty coaches combos and big bands, teaches jazz theory, history and improvisation and tutors burgeoning composers. Each day includes combo and big band rehearsals and innovative master classes. The 2010 camp will take place at Jacksonville School in historic Jacksonville. Evenings are filled with practice opportunity, faculty performances and concerts on the Britt hill. The week concludes with the Combo Recital and Big Band Concert. Download a sample daily schedule.

We are seeking students to fill big band and combo configurations that require, in total, 12 trumpets, 12 trombones, 12-16 saxophones, 7 basses, 7 keyboards, 7 drums and 7 guitars. Students will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis. If we receive more registrations than we have spots available, priority will be given to camp alumni. Auditions are only required if there is over registration for an instrument.

The Instrumental Jazz Camp is designed for intermediate to advanced jazz students ages 14-19. Lodging in the SOU dorms is available for a Room & Board fee. Students under 18 are supervised at all times.
