Lisa Smirnova, piano
"Play every note as if your life depended on it" - the Austrian-Russian pianist Lisa Smirnova has made this sentence from Friedrich Gulda her own. Critics praise her urgent, precise and intense play, name her in the same breath as Gulda, which especially pleases her of course. "He's my great role model. I can only humbly hope that I'm moving in the same direction."
Lisa Smirnova was born in Moscow, where she was trained by Anna Kantor and Lev Naumov among others. Important and influential for her artistic career, however, was the renowned piano teacher Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. In the early 90s she encountered him at a master class in Salzburg and decided to move to Austria for good. Further studies with Maria Curcio in London followed.
For the present, a high point in her career has been the recording of the Eight London Suites by Georg Friedrich Handel that was released by ECM New Series in November 2011. Lisa Smirnova prepared for this CD project for five years and is pleased that she was able to realise her musical vision at a "major label" that, with its founder and mastermind Manfred Eicher, stands uniquely for the highest artistic standards.
The Britt Orchestra will back Smirnova as she performs Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2.
The Harris / Fitch Trio will be performing on the Pre-Concert Lecture Deck from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., prior to the pre-concert lecture.
Please join Eric Teel, Director of FM Program Services at Jefferson Public
Radio, in the lower Britt gardens at 7 p.m. for a Q & A with David Danzmayr and Lisa Smirnova.
