The Russian Easter Overture is exultant, expressed in terms of sheer vitality and visceral excitement as well as mystery and solemnity. Majestic and austere one moment, bursting with dazzling energy and revelry the next, this is a true feast for the ears. Soviet-born violinist Philippe Quint (pronounced “Philip Kwint”) is known for his combination of humor, charm and extraordinary musicality. His mother, Lora Kvint, is celebrated as one of Russia’s most well-known composers, described as the Russian equivalent of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Quint studied at Moscow’s Special Music School for the Gifted and made his orchestral debut at the age of nine, performing Wieniawski’s Concerto No. 2. He defected to the U.S. at age 16 and earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Juilliard. Now an American citizen, Quint makes his home in New York. He will perform Glazunov’s Violin Concerto on his 1723 Stradivarius violin. Tchaikovsky’s final work was his Sixth Symphony. He died just nine days after its premiere. Titled “Pathetique” for pathos, it expresses a complex range of emotions—sorrow leavened with hope, happiness tinged with foreboding despair. Perhaps autobiographical from an emotional standpoint, this symphony’s popular appeal is immortal as the last great work of this adored romantic composer.
