2020 BFO Composer/Conductor Fellow Ellen Reid makes her conducting debut on Shostakovich’s spritely Festive Overture. You’ll also hear one of Reid’s most recent compositions. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony represents the culmination of the great master’s symphonic output. With a powerful finale that features a chorus, vocal soloists, and the famous Ode to Joy, help us celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday in the grandest of fashions!
Guest Artists: Sylvia D'Eramo, J'Nai Bridges, Damien Jeter
During the 2019-2020 season, soprano Sylvia D’Eramo joins the Los Angeles Opera as a Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist. She also makes her company and role debut with Lyric Opera Kansas City as Musetta in La bohème. For the 2018-2019 season, she joined the Benenson Young Artist Program at Palm Beach Opera, where she appeared in the Rising Stars Concert, and covered Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Adele in Die Fledermaus. In May of 2019 Ms. D’Eramo joined the Glenn Falls Symphony as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, then returned to Santa Fe Opera for her second year as an Apprentice, where she covered Mimi in La bohème, and sang Barena in Jenůfa.
J’Nai Bridges, known for her “plush-voiced mezzo-soprano” (The New York Times), has been heralded as “a rising star” (Los Angeles Times), gracing the world’s top stages. Her 2019-2020 operatic engagements in the U.S. this season include her debut at The Metropolitan Opera, singing the role of Nefertiti in Philip Glass’ opera Akhnaten, and her house and role debut at Washington National Opera performing Dalila in Samson et Dalila. Bridges will sing the title role of Carmen for the first time in Europe at the Dutch National Opera and will make her debut with the Festival d’Aix-en-provence singing Margret in a new production of Wozzeck, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.
Tenor Damien Geter is a diverse artist whose credits include performances ranging from the operatic stage to the television screen. Damien’s 2019-2020 season includes appearances with the Metropolitan Opera (Undertaker in Porgy and Bess), Seattle Opera (Colonel in The Rising and the Falling), Eugene Opera (Angelotti in Tosca), Resonance Ensemble, and Third Angle New Music (Sanctuaries.) Damien’s 2018-2019 included appearances with Seattle Opera in the role of the Undertaker, and covering the role of Jake in Porgy and Bess; and a debut with Vashon Opera in the role of Colline in La Boheme. Damien returned to Portland Opera in the fall of 2018 in the role of Dr. Grenville in Verdi’s La Traviata.
