HOMETOWN: Spokane, WA
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: I'm the principal timpanist of the Spokane Symphony, and spend quite a bit of my non-performance time on Union / musician advocacy work. I also teach percussion privately and in an adjunct capacity.
BACKGROUND/EDUCATION: In High School, I attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, from which I was more or less "recruited" to join the BU percussion studio led by BSO timpanist, Tim Genis. Before moving to Spokane for the timpani position there, I attended Tanglewood as a percussion fellow, as well as the National Repertory Orchestra, as Timpanist. CAREER INSPIRATION: I was inspired to become a percussionist by my best friend tapping his pencil in study hall. When I later fell desperately in love with many of the great classics of Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Stravinsky, and others, I was ripe for the conversion.
MUSICAL TASTES: Other than most things Classical, I love The Police, Young the Giant, and all sorts of "World Music", Jazz, and on and on. Basically if it's good, it's worth listening to.
MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Probably practicing Labor or Intellectual Property Law.
IF YOU WEREN’T A MUSICIAN: Practicing Intellectual Property Law.
BRITT HISTORY: This is my (gulp) 13th season!
SOUTHERN OREGON FAVORITES: Eating at New Sammy's.
FAVORITE BRITT MEMORY: Probably our performance of Carl Nielsen's Symphony no. 4 in 2005. I love the piece, and it has a totally crazy timpani part (in a good way).
